The King's College Engineering Society is the oldest known society of its kind in the world! Sanctioned by the college principle and with the patronage of college professors, King's College Engineering Society was founded in 1847.

The aim of the society was to take in various scientific and engineering periodicals of the day, the reading of original papers (predominantly by students) and also the giving of prizes. It then evolved to include dinners, fundraising and other extra-curricular activities.

The society by all accounts had a brilliant start and flourished, though there have been periods during which the name and aim of the society changed slightly, one notable change took place in 1850 when it became the 'Shakespearean Reading Society'!

The engineers were also in charge of looking after Reggie the college mascot, whilst in their charge they paraded him down the Strand, took him on a visit to the zoo and managed to get him trampled on by an elephant!

The engineers have always played a large part in the college community; be it from causing chaos and creating a social atmosphere to improving themselves and peers intellectually, through talks and the King's Engineer (college newspaper produced by the engineers).

(If anyone wishes to add to this very brief summery of the society or has any stories that would be of interest to present day engineers please e-mail the society)
